Like you I recently dipped my toe into the usb interface market, migrating off my older PCI gear with an eye towards the future.
My research concluded that MOST of the currently available models were fine, with some subtle performance difference between the lower end units. So I guess what I'm saying is - get the interface that costs the least amount that offers what you want. I went with the Presonus Audiobox because of availability (Guitar Center) and positive online reviews. It's not perfect but doesn't need to be for $150. It just has to work.

An alternative to Pinky's suggestion is the Steinberg CI1. I have been using them for about a year now, still going strong, have been on almost 24/7 , very little next to minimal noise. My Shure Sm58 and a bunch of other condenser mics that I owned work perfectly with that audio interface too. So its pretty much a good idea to get the Steinberg CI1 or Presonus Audiobox.

Also, the Roland Quadcapture seems pretty cool. The place where I work at (a local school) just got one and it seems good, with MIDI I/O for your keyboard, combo XLR/jack for your mics and guitar etc.

I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett now and I'm very pleased with that even after having moved from the very expensive RME Fireface UFX. Hardly noticed any difference at all.

I agree, Ive had so many different ones and they are all above the CD spec these days, and the computers today all seem to have so much RAM the plugs work fine for most people. Audio is no longer a huge burden on the computers of today. Its all about what you "need"...like MIDI or maybe you need a bunch of mic inputs..
I was looking at a new NAMM Behringer release and it comes with the DAW too!! a full version.
It has enough I/O's and MIDAS preamps with good gain, you could be set for years.

for Midi the UX2 isnt it, no MIDI.
