active or passive

For monitors active seem to take less room and cables. The other would be the gain stages going on.For instance,If I bring up my DAW (Reaper) I have the fader on my master send, then my laptop output volume control (1/8th inch out),Then into the active monitor x2 (left and right) each with separate vol level controls.Am I thinking wrong to shoot for -6 db on the DAW master then set the rest at 50%. Or below just to avoid to much gain.Dont like the idea of letting my laptop amp having any thing to do with the mix.Or should I go usb out to a mixer(zoom R24) the use that to control the speakers?Just thinkin... sometimes I just confuse myself.

Laptop output to monitors? Time to rethink that whole scenario man.

Get an audio interface. Please? :)

The Zoom R24 is not a mixer, its a stand-alone recorder that can also be used as an interface, I believe. If you use it as yoru interface via USB, then the monitors should be pluggedinto it.
