We are a trio of music producers in Hong Kong working on an experimental pop album. We are in the development phase of the songs and looking for a forward-thinking producer with experience in traditional and experimental rhythm (electronic, R&B, jazz, funk, down-tempo, world). This person will be addressing the various rhythmic components of the songs. They must have a background in electronic drum sequencing and arranging. Knowledge with hardware sequencers and samplers is a plus. Experience playing/composing acoustic drums and percussion is also a plus. This is an opportunity to work hands on in a state-of-the-art music studio with connections to a multitude of global musicians, artists, and institutions. Our facility includes:

Pyramix 64-bit Digital Audio Workstation, Horus 8 I/O Audio Interface, V-Cube HD Turnkey Video Player, Ravenna Network, Smart AV Tango Workstation Controllers, Sonodyne SM300 and SM200 Monitors, Charter Oak PEQ-1 Hardware EQ, Charter Oak SCL-1 Hardware Compressor, Charter Oak Condenser Microphones, an isolated ‘Floating Floor’ Recording Room, and much more.

The studio is housed in an animation studio within C1 Enterprise and works in tandem with The Empty Gallery, a groundbreaking art gallery and perhaps the most experimental music venue in Asia.

This position is negotiable from one to three months depending on compatibility with the team and starts immediately after the candidate is chosen. Lodging in a high-rise apartment with a beautiful ocean view overlooking Aberdeen Harbour is included. Airfare is also included. If you are interested in work experience within the international creative vortex of Hong Kong, contact us to set up an interview.

This reaks of nonsense. This isn't an internship, this is expecting a lot from someone for nothing. An internship is a learning experience, not a work for free experience. I don't even care if expenditures are included.

There are LOTs of internships in many fields that pay nothing. Zero.
Some even have waiting lines to get one. No airfare or hotel accommodations either.

Yeah, airfare and lodging isn't too unreasonable for a recording studio internship!
Heck, it may even be a legal internship in HK!

Thanks for all your feedback. Yes, this is indeed an internship with no pay. We are not really asking for that much either... We just need an intern to help us with all the small details, research, experiments, etc. that the record producers do not have time to do. While yes, it is more hands on than an old fashioned studio internship, it is not a "work-for-free experience". Maybe you are thinking a little too inside the box on the old fashioned ways an intern was used... But this person will not be our 'bitch', they will have an active role in the production process. Feel free to respond with any questions.

This is quite a lot to ask of an intern right out of college. That's why it sounds like working for free and not a learning experience.

I have no issue with having an intern sweep floors and grabbing coffee, even supervised work experience seems fine (I mean that's how my internship went). That little block is expecting specialized experience that would normally justify payment and it seems like your just trying to snag that for nothing.

But who knows maybe indeed this is normal in HK. I would be pissed if a studio expected this from me right out of college.

You keep bashing this. What's the point?
I get that YOU don't approve, so what?

Someone, somewhere will see this as a golden opportunity and be happy with it.

You dont approve, don't apply. Just that simple. No need to go on your social justice warrior mission.

Personally, I think it's a great opportunity, and is exactly what an internship should be, a learning experience by working in the industry. I'm sure you'll have lots of interest.

I'm actually moving to Hong Kong next summer to work for several years (non-music related), but would be interested in hearing about any other opportunities you may have in future. I will also have a young son with me who is a budding musician - an opportunity to intern in, or even visit that type of environment would be great.

Any problem if I mail you at the address you've given ?
