I don't know that I can really help, but just to rule out a few of the obvious things,
have you kept everything else equal for testing?

Same preamp, cable, software settings, etc?
Looks like the b1 has a pad and a roll off. Did you make sure these were set the same as your friends?

I think it is unlikely to be a simple self fix. If the mic is under warranty, then exchange it. There could be problems for example bad capacitors, bad transistors, possibly muck on the capsule - stuff that would require tech skills to diagnose and repair.

Otherwise, double check that the pad is not engaged on the mic (or on the preamp/interface if it has pad), otherwise you are cranking the gain up for no good reason. Pad is only needed if your input signal is too strong.

Sorry to not be more helpful

It's the sixth word in your opening sentence that is the problem, Jiff!

Any mic you buy will be perfectly suited to your needs, until you use it long enough to learn that it's not.

I've used that mic at a mates before and for the money its spot on. (entry level yes but bang for the bucks)
I have a b2 pro and it take a while to settle sometimes. the switch makes it noisy sometimes i have to fiddle a bit before it goes quite.
If i where you i'd get it checked by Stu our resident mic specialist repair man.
Might not be his bag but you can find him at xaudia.com
Might not be economically viable to repair. In which case the choice is yours. If so I'd keep it for a later mod project.

good luck i hope its nothing serious.

Behringer B1 condenser mic schematics anyone?

Discusses the internals, no schematic, but some thoughts on mods.
