Restoring old headphones DIY and CHEAP

Hello good peoples,

I thought I'd share this:
I had several pair of FOSTEX T20 headphones that I used for monitoring during tracking. With age the ear cups got really nasty with cracking and flaking.
I looked into replacement cups. $19 each (not a pair) Too much! I found some after market ones that were about half but people complained about the stitching quality.
Here was my work around.

I carefully cut the cup with a pair of scissors and removed the foam donut from inside. My intent was to measure it to cut new ones, but the actual foam padding was just fine.
I then used some adhesive spray to fix the padding directly to the headphone. I had the special stuff for acoustic foam on hand, but anything would probably do.
Use just enough to hold it in place.
Next, I bought several pairs of micro fiber 5"-6" buffing bonnets from Wal-Mart's auto section. They slipped right over the pads, are very comfortable and can be washed.
The ones I got are red and look pretty cool with the black headset.

Total cost to do 4 pairs of phones $20 instead of $160 :thumbs up:

Cool!

Thanks for the tip.

I love coming up with McGuyver-type solutions, but I never would have though of that
