Inset French Saying Here
For the last 5 weeks or so I have been building a prs clone from scratch.
Now ready to stain. A random selection of pics to date:

Man that's awesome! What colour are you staining it?

I can only dream of making a guitar that looks that sweet.

How does it play?

Just interested as to why you wanted to make a PRS clone? You've obviously got the skill to create whatever you want!! Seems like a shame that everyone will just see a "PRS" when it's all YOUR hard work (not your wallets!)

Looks great though!

Is that an oak neck? looks sweet!
No its Honduran Mahogany with a Rosewood Fretboard. Bought Fretboard on Ebay from English firm pre inlaid. Just had to sand to 12" radius and shape sides.

Your right. I went PRS as I love the shape and look. Wanted to make a guitar that would 'pop' with tiger maple, but would sound great. Therefore located all bits to match PRS.

And my next project will be a new top for an old guitar:

Staining Update - NO PICS YET.

I have spent a few days trying out stains and techniques.

Using the left over maple and testing how to:

1. Protect the edge to simulate a binding (like PRS). Hard to do as the aniline dyes go under any protective masking tapes. I have just tried protecting the edge with nitrocellulose finish and then will wash black (to bring out the stripes) and colour dyes onto the rest later.

2. Getting the washes and finishes right. I am using techniques from 'Fine Woodworking' and other sources. Hard to get right. My son has another technique of using hot water to open the pores and then sanding back. Looks like it will work.

3. Getting the colour I want. I am trying several black wash strengths and colour strengths. Measuring them out pretty accurately.

I will keep you informed and write up a technique that (hopefully) works.

If I stuff it up, I will put plastic or wood binding on later.

Ready for Nitro! With Pics

Cannot Stop.....

Sanded everything back, more blue then oil sealer.

Fake binding edges scrape off cleanly so should look good.

Ready to further polish tomorrow, join neck on then Nitro.

looks absolutely beautiful.

I'm not too big of a fan of black hardware but that thing looks INCREDIBLE with it. I really love the blue finish.

Congrats on the new guitar and the work you've put into it!

Three Coats of Nitrocellulose

Put on three coats yesterday. I am a beginner spray painter....

Couple of runs, but they will sand out OK.

Need to sand with 2000 or so grit for final coat.

VERY happy with the binding effect. Thought it would come out looking crap but actually I like it!

Awesome stuff.

Can't wait to see it totally complete!

I am letting it sit for a few days before I finish sand it.

Word for the wise - heed the warnings on spraying with Nitro.

I used a large garage but no breathing protection. Spewed all yesterday.

Not good for your health is Nitrocellulose.

I will post more pics as I get things done. I too want to get it finished!

Then might do a thread on my experiences and lessons learnt.

Just spent many hours lowering the action.

Needed to raise the nut and lower the bridge. Milled some 3 mm off the top of the bridge post mounts, shortened the posts and routed some more wood out. Now action is just right (for my son's taste).

3 degrees neck angle was not enough....

Hopefully all will come good, though tested it all yesterday and it sounded terrific anyway.

More pics soon.

terrific job!

I just fixed my first broken neck....maybe Ill try building one now lol :)

Looks great! I just finished a Tele-ish project. It's very rewarding to play an instrument that you made with your own hands.
