Syncing d-160/d-108 - Home Recording

Does anyone here know how to hookup these two machines together for 24 track operation?
Do I need the time-code option to sync these machines, or simply an optical cable/midi cable hookup? The answer may be in the manuals, it just doesn't seem clear to me.
