I bought my MD used for $325 and that was Guitar Center, I think I had an internet guy offer me $600....a year or two ago.

...but be careful, I had Cakewalk for awhile and went back to the good ol Record/Play setup....fhkn computer locked up, it felt very awkward, slow, less human interaction....a fiber optic out would have really made the MD8 modern/compatible.

Computers is the future...the editing options are phenomenal.

So cough it up whats your MD 8 bottom dollar?

I wouldn't get rid of your MD-8 just yet. Cubase is not a very consumer freindly product!

I bought the first Tascam Portastudio cassette 144- 4track.
$1200. It is still in use with my nephews that are now 28!!!Thats fhkn well built sht.

Then it was the Fostex 4-track, a Tascam 644 MIDI 4track, Tascam 8 track cassette-tan, an Alesis ADAT, another 8 track TAscam cassette- blue (nice piece), then a TEAC Reel to Reel (short lived- frkn tape kept spinning off), Yamaha cheap 4-Track cassette (crap), Sony MiniDisc 4 track, nice!, then a Tascam 4 track cassette 424, then back to MiniDisc MD8, then Cakewalk (short lived, great for editing it appears), an Roland 840EX (too complicated, alot of nice features), then back to the Yamaha MD8.

TOP PICKS:
1) The Yamaha MD8 I like the best. Minidisc is cool.
2) Alesis ADAT was user friendly but you really needed a above average mixer $$.
3) Cakewalk- but need a really good, dedicated computer w/ CDR.
I had a buddy that lost like 6 months of stuff when his hardrive crashed...gone, everything gone!

Recently bought a DMP3 Preamp that works well with the Yamaha, use it on tracks 1 & 2.

RNC...soon.

Looks from this thread, MD8 is on the out....

I still have my MD8 in my studio; but, I don't use it since I got the 2816 from Yamaha.

It's a good box but its final sound product isn't as good as the 2816.

But, for nephews, and/or close friends, it's a nice Xmas gift.

But, you know, I don't have any friends that close, YET>

I never had a problem with the MD8 and, so far, the 2816 has been phenominal.

yeh, i been lucky so far with my MD8, i read alot had the MD load mechanism go to sht..so i'm extra careful loading and unloading discs...

2816...did you try computer recording and comeback to this porta-mulit track format?

i just looked at the 2816!
i had Roland 840 flashbacks...your a better man than I...I couldn't seem to learn the multi functions on the roland 840 which looks very similiar....

I gave the 840 to my brother (and a couple 4 track cassettes?, no I'm not rich we're just tight..he taught me how to play guitar),

Anyway, and he's had luck...after serious battles learning the DISC FULL ERRORS and losing complete songs...gawd all the digital functions, hundreds of effects, editing, copying pasting, amp simulators, automated mix down memory,......whooooaaaa

i think my blood pressure just went up.

I love my MD8. I'd rather record with a 24 track analogue tape machine, but this is what my budget allowed me for. The data compresion is a bit noticable though on some songs, especially electronica. The lows just are not there. But all in all, it's a great machine. I just wish it had more balance inputs.

I'm still using an MD8. I don't record enough to justify an upgrade. I'm not wild about the data compression but, if I want to record a real CD I'm gonna go to a studio anyway.

If I do upgrade, it'll be for more tracks. There are 16 track machines out there, with CD burners for $1000. 16 tracks is attractive for me because it gives you enough tracks to double guitar tracks when necessary, add plenty of backing vocals if appropriate and it would allow me to spread my drums out over 4 or 5 tracks or so. For now, I'm ok with the md8 because I can just plug up and record, using real knobs and faders. When an idea hits, I'm recording in seconds. That's probably the most beneficial thing to it.

I started out with a Yam 4 track, tape recorder; then, two Tascam 488 boxes -- a great sturdy machine and I still have the 488Mk11; then, a Yam MD8 -- good box.

The 2816 wasn't too difficult because of former experience; but, there is a lot to the box and for those who like to edit, it's only a fair editing SIAB.

But, the sound of the 2816 is great and burning CDs is an easy part to learn. I've just hooked up an RNC, and my Grace101 goes into the RNC and then to the recorder. Very, very, nice -- good control of the sudden loud vocal notes or synth smashes.

I had looked at the Roland stuff but learned you had to buy their CD burner, early on, and someone mentioned that the buttons break off. So, I stuck with Yamaha. The reverb on the 2816 is Yamaha and it is very good.

But, I still haven't unplugged my MD8!

I'm in the middle of tracking vocals and started getting Error Messages. I'm looking for one to keep the sessions rolling while I send mine back to Yamaha for servicing( 3 to 4 weeks turnaround ).

Any one else got one for sale?

I recently scored a nice Yamaha MD8 off Ebay, and I like it quite a bit, on technical features, sound quality, and overall value.

I got a fairly extensive package deal, so I figure my fractional cost of the MD8 was $350, which I think is a pretty good deal. I got another $250 worth of accesories, including: 14 Data MD's, 2 Stereo MD's, a Lens Cleaning MD, and 2 Efx units: the ART-FX-1 & the Alesis Nanoverb. $600 paid for the total package, plus shipping. The MD-Data media is a $10 item, each, retail. The 2 MD's and 1 Lens cleaner is worth $10, total, and the 2 efx units are worth $50/ea.

Therefore, my fractional cost of the MD8 is $350, and I think that's a great value. The MD8's a really nice sounding, easy-to-use, porta-format unit that's as fun to use as any authentic Tascam Portastudio.
