Fostex and Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition)

Hi

I wonder if anyone can advise me on how to get my Fostex D160 to talk to my PC running Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition.

I have no idea of what is involved but I presume I save a programme on the D160 via ADAT perhaps and have my sound card feed it into the software via the optical port.

Any help would be appreciated. I do not yet own the software but I'm trying to assertain suitability before I do. Hope someone can help.

It all depends on which way you're moving the audio. My hookup is adat i/o going both ways. You also need to have MIDI i/o. It doesn't need to go both ways but I have mine hooked up to go both ways because I hate re-patching depending on what I'm doing.

I've never used CEP synced to my Fostex (I'll try it tonight) but the concept is universal and most programs can be setup to communicate with your Fostex.

Basically, you set one machine as master and the other as slave. The Slave "chases" or follows timecode or sync from the Master. Typically, you set the machine you want to record TO as the master and the mache you want to record FROM as the slave.

There are certain settings that should be the same on both machines. These are frame rate, tempo, and sync type.

I'll try syncing up to CEP tonight and give a more detailed write up.

I think you've also answered my hidden question of "will I get good use out of buying Audition" in that I presume it's capable of the sync you mention. My curiosity is also - what file format is common between the Fostex songs/tracks and CEP - probably a silly question...

CEP/Audition kicks butt for what it does. I think it's the best editor around. I've used SF and Wavelab a lot and both of those are good, but aren't as intuitive and as easy to work in as CEP. I've used it since version 1.0 and before that, I was using the 2 track Cool Edit. But it all depends on what you're looking for. For mixing, other than a quickie, I think CEP sucks.

I haven't had a chance to sync my Fostex to CEP, but just going through the menus and help, it doesn't look like CEP is the best program for doing that.

File formats aren't really an issue because you're not transferring file data.. you're transfering audio. Most programs capture to a .wav format. Some recorders can even export .wav files through a scsi, usb, or firewire port. But I know yours does not. In case you really want to know, your Fostex machine uses a proprietary disk management format called FDMS which is not compatible with Windows or any Mac OS. However, I have seen a Linux program that lets you mount external SCSI HD's and "rip" FDMS files.

What exactly are you looking for in a program besides syncing to your Fostex?

Mainly looking to take recorded tracks from Fostex, edit them and mix / master with CEP effects other than those I have on outborads. For instance I've got a nice song already recorded with one track containing a hum from the keyboard left channel. I hope to be able to bring that track in somehow and fix the hum. If possible, then put it back on the D160.

Well, CEP synced up great to my Fostex. I was able to send audio to and from both. Compared to syncing to Cubase or Sonar, CEP was by far the easiest. It was just a matter of a few settings and I was in business. I think I'm going to come straight into CEP from now on for editing rather than creating a project Cubase and making a bunch of unecessary files/directories.

For mixing, I'll still use Cubase though. But for what you're doing, CEP sounds like your best bet. Have fun.
