Microtech-Gefell info

hey guys,

I was wondering if you could tell me more about these Gefell mics:

MV 692
PM 750
PM 860

They seem to be SDCs, right? How do they compare to other SDCs like the Neumann 180s series or others. I am asking because I see lots of them on the German Ebay site. They seem to be going cheap (less than $100), so I was wondering if I should get one of those when I am travelling to Germany in a few weeks.

Any info about these mics?

a few?? I see what I can do. Need a few more MD441s? *just kidding*

Do you know anything about these Gefell SDC? I read a post by a German recording engineer. Here is what he said (translated):

"The PM 750 is small diaphragm condenser. It has the M94 capsule, which is shock mounted internally on the MV691 head. The basket (pop-filter) distords the high frequencies quite a bit. Since it is a vocal/broadcast mic, the 10dB pad is hard wired. Its still a great sounding mic if you operate it without basket. The noise level is rather high, though. If you are into electronics, you can disable the low-cut and 10dB pads. If you can't do it yourself, you chould get its successor, the PM 860, since it has switches. The electronics is the same as for the MV 692."

I still have no idea how it will sound like, though.

I don't have any experience with the models you are asking about but I was fortunate enough to inherit a UMT70S which is an exceptional microphone. For whatever its worth...

not to put a damper on things, but I inherited my UMT70S from my friend who recently died from brain cancer. I would rather have him around than his microphone.

Gefell M300

I just got a pair of M300 Gefells. So far the jury is out on them but I have gotten a decent acoustic guitar sound using them, the only test I've run so far. As far a comparison to Neumann, I have no experience with the KM 84 or the KM184 but I've been told they sound in between the two Neumans mentioned.

DOT at this link has lots of experience testing mics with his Listening Sessions http://www.studioforums.com/6/ubb.x?...1&m=1126036424 so you may want to read his reply about my mics. I spent a lot of reading time and E-Mails and was about to buy a pair of KM184 until the price increase a couple of months ago. That put them on back burner for a while. I then looked at Josephson c42 which looked to be a good second choice after some study of those I became aware of the Gefells and went that route. That may not have been my best idea but it won at almost a coin toss . I guess I got taken up with the Neumann part of Gefell if nothing else.

I had another post about the Gefells with several positive replies but I can not find it or its been deleted. Wish I could help there.

For your SDC choice you might consider the M300 or C42. Both seem to be good choices. Its real hard to find any objective reviews of Gefell, or many at all for that matter.

Good Luck and I hope I didn't cloud the choice to bad for you.
