acoustic gtr mic

Just looking for some ideas on getting an acoustic guitar mic.
I own a couple of shure ksm 27s but I have not gotten the sound that I am looking for with them. I guess I was looking for suggetions on acoustic mics or maybe even place ment ideas for mine.

Mics I've liked on acoustic guitar lately...

Studio Projects B1

I'm not saying they are all in the same league sonically (as you usually get what you pay for) but they all get the job done.

Dude, you should hear the Marshall MXL603S mic on acousitic guiatr... it sounds great, and the MXL603S doesn't cost much either... at least check it out.

There really are 2 camps, and it depends on the guitar, the room, placement, and playing style. Camp 1 says use 1 or 2 small diaphragm mics, which may be used in combimation with an LD over the shoulder, or backed off as a room mic, or by themselves. These people like MXL 603, Oktava MC012, Studio Projects C-4, Shure SM81, Neumann KM84/KM184, Josephson C42.
Camp 2 uses one large diaphragm mic close on the 12th fret. They seem to like Studio Projects B-1, Rode NTK, AKG C414B-ULS.
I've had my best luck with the C414, so I guess I just fell in with camp 2.-Richie

The Gefell 300 is wonderful... the 295 frighteningly good... the Josephson C-42 is absolutely no slouch... but in the under $350 catagory nothing I've ever met can come close to the T.H.E. "KP-6M"... but as always... YMMV

Well, maybe it's just another phase I'm going through, but I'm really liking the sound of my old SM57(& 58) on my Yairi since I got the RNP. Nice and "woody" sounding ( whatever that means. ) Double tracked and panned out a bit, it sounds great. The 603 is a bit "clanky" in comparison. I'm sure different guitars need different mics. You have to find one that sounds the way you want it on yours. I'm thinking of getting a nice dynamic to try on my acoustic....maybe a Sennheiser 441, SM7 or something like them. I've gotten some very nice results using a 603 on the neck and a Rode NTK on the bridge. Mixing up mics can sometimes give you a sound you're looking for. You can get lots of different sounds on an acoustic just by changing the mic placement and inch or two. Just some thoughts.

I agree totally! Recently got two MXL603S and the results
were very good indeed. Not sure what Steve heard that was
"clanky".

I've gotten very good results from placing my CAD E-200 in figure 8 mode inbtween the guitar and a hard reflective surface.
Stereo-ish sounding from a mono source.

And also sometimes get real good sound from a little $35 ECM8000 omni right up into the soundhole....sometimes sounds like crap though.

I've really been liking an AT4033 lately. That seems to be magic with a big-sounding Martin (I have a D-35).

Guess that makes me a camp 2 guy too, though I've had good luck with a SD (AT Pro37R) on the 12th fret and a LD (take your choice) about 18" out from the lower body. So maybe that makes me a camp 1.5 guy.

I like my 603. I think it's a fairly decent mic. But by itself, the top end just can be a tad hard - on mine anyway. Could be just the way my guitar sounds with it. Anyway, the 57 seemed to be a bit smoother on it. Different mics sound different on different guitars and to different ears. Everybody has to adjust to what they hear on their equipment.

If your recording acoustic instruments... you should at least checkout the Marshall MXL603S.

CAD E100 about 6 inches out between the soundhole and bottom of fretboard. I've gotten excellent results with this but depends on the guitar too.

Just when I figure out that you can't get a decent acoustic sound without micing the guitar, along comes someone with a big Breedlove 12 string, plugs into the board through a Fishman blender and blows my doors right off on a live outdoor festival stage. Never heard anything like it.

Treeline. I occasionally share your sense of surprise at the Fishman Prefix Plus. I actually got what became a keeper through a Joemeek with a Taylor/Fishman. If you tweak it enough, you can make it sound very much like a mic'd up guitar.-Richie
