AT 4047 vs. 4050--need yer input fast

so i've used a 4047 as my main vocal mic for over a year. i love it. unfortunately it was on loan from a friend who recently reclaimed it.

now i'm in the market...literally...tomorrow. i've got a session tomorrow and i'm heading to GC to pick up a mic b4 hand.

to my knowledge, the 4050 is much like the 4047, except with switchable patterns (cardiod, omni, figure 8), which may be a very useful feature, but is it $100 more worth of useful?

also i'm eyeballing a 3060 which is about the same price as the 4047. it's a tube mic. i've no experience w/ tube mics but would suspect they provide some serious warmth.

i usually run my vocal tracks through a dbx 386.

i'd love some opinions on these mics and any other large tips you may have to offer b4 i make a purchase. especially since GC isn't too hip to exchanging mics.

thanks!
michael

I don't know the 4047...But the 4050 is a nice mic! Before you buy A/B it with a KSM44 they are similar..but to me the 44 is a little "clearer" and a little more "open"..either way you would be getting a nice mic..Good luck

I haven't heard either the 4047 ($479) or 4050 ($499) in person, but the 4047 is transformer coupled and the 4050 is transformerless, so they will sound different. I think the 4047 is probably more colored, and if you already love the 4047 I would stick with it unless you can compare them side-by-side. The KSM44 ($699) is compared to the 4050 in the review below.
