Classic Blues Tune- 2nd MP3

We're sort of posting up pieces of the house mono mix. We'll probably link to our web site tomorrow and put up another. Somebody wanted to hear what I think NTK is good for. Well, here it is- into Joemeek twinQ. The backing vocals on both girls were done with Oktava MK319 into the Joemeek. Rhythm guitar with an SG into Pod Pro (shift/ tweed blues) into a Carver PM125 power amp, then to a 1X12 Marshall cab with a Celestion vintage 30 mic'd with a Shure SM7B into Avalon AD2022.
Slide guitar with a Parker Fly into the Avalon, then to TC electronics M300 for reverb, then the Carver to the Marshall cab. The cab was mic'd front and rear with SM7B in front and AKG D112 in back. Both mics to the Joemeek, and then to Roland VS1824CD. Bass DI into the Avalon. Snare is mic'd on top with AKG C414B-ULS into the Avalon and underneath with SM7B into DBX386.
Overheads- Oktava MC012's into the Joemeek. kick- AKG D112 into the Avalon. As usual with the house mix, aside from some reverb on the guitar and a little light compressiion on the lead vocal, there is no compression, no FX, no panning, no EQ, just the facts ma'am.
On the backing vocals, I use the Joemeek compressor as a filter, on but disabled (ratio is 1:1, maximum threshold and attack, minimum release). Hope y'all like it. I threatened to put the girls in beehive wigs with skirts split to mid thigh for the photo op.-

Could you wav-clip the intro a bit? There's some light "fuzz" there that could be trimmed off.

Good vocal performance. Gtr is a bit low in the mix. Nice female vox. Drums have some timing issues, but sound fairly well recorded. Voice gets lost in the verse briefly around 3:00 (and later)...

There are some slight tracking issues and some more medium-weight mix issues that don't quite articulate into words right now (I'll see if the brain's workin any better by the weekend and give this another shot)...

BTW have you tried NTKs as drum OHs? That would be a little sweeter than the mc012s, no?

Of course, the tracking issues are more relevent to me, as this ain't mixed yet. That would be Littledog's job. Timing issues have to do with trying to cover for me as I had a brain fart and dropped a whole beat. That's what I get for tracking without a click track. Yeah, the girls rock. I like this house mix, pretty good separation. Is this like for live in the club or live in the studio? Those mics on the kit sound realy potent and keen, are picking up the kit real nice. I like the vocals and guitars and bass. Girls blend well. Some minor transients on the snare occasionaly and a few peaks on the slide.

Well, participant, I only own 1 NTK, and I'll confess I have never considered it as an overhead. For overheads, I generally use the Oktavas, SP C-4's, or a pair of AKG C2000B's, all of which can be just right on any given song. I'm really looking forward to hearing some of this stuff mixed properly. After a year of tracking with no reverb, I think I'm ready for a little airbrushing.-Richie

Well, it may be live feel, but eveything was tracked independantly. Thanks for your kind words. y'all. More will follow. On this project, we have tracked everything from medieval Celtic lap harp with rennaissance classic guitar, muted viola, and Persian zarb to big hair jock rock. Blues, country, folk, jazz, neopsychedelic, everything but reggae and disco- working....
The best part is getting to work with the best people I've ever gotten to play with, and to see Maureen Flemming, (the former love of my life) again. I made a list of the best people I've ever worked with, and got lucky and signed them all. Starting with *no* knowledge whatsoever of recording almost 2 years ago, I've been driven by the desire to learn enough skills to track these people without fucking it up. We're almost there. We'll be pulling the tracks off into Pro Tools over the next 3-4 weeks. Then we'll see what Littledog can do with it. Can I have my reverb now, mommy?-Richie
