Angry Playback/Recording Timing Problem

I am new to Cakewalk and only recently got a copy of Home Studio 02. I am fumbling my wasy through how to use it and have learnt the basics but have a big, and very anoying problem. I use the program on my laptop and have had no problems but if i try to use my PC the recording stuffsup. When i playback what i record it is sped up by about 3 times, giving that chipmunk effect to my recordings. Does any one know why this would happen and how to fix it. It is not a problem with my connection as i have recorded and played back using windows sound recorder with no such problems. I wish to use my PC as it has a better soundcard thatn my laptop but cant get it to work properly due to this problem.

Cool

FooFighter,

Are you recording audio or are you talking MIDI? I've had probs with HS2002 & MIDI. If I change the tempo of a MIDI file by clicking on the Tempo icon, I would usually expect the tune to speed up, but the pitch would be unaffected. Like you, I got the chipmunk effect, and no amount of clicking here there and everywhere would change to the original pitch and tempo.

I get similar problems when looping. For a half measure or so at the start of the loop the pitch and tempo are both raised, but then settled down again to normal.

I'm thinking BUG.

There's another thread hereabouts started by Tillamoor that covers similar ground to yours.

With a bit of luck, HS2004 will have rectified this anomolay.

Have you got both programs set up with the same sample rate/bit rate? The program should detect those, but it is a stab in the dark.

If the laptop is configured to use the right timing clock but the desktop isn't, it might behave that way.

BluesMeister, have you ever opened up your Event view to see if there are some tempo change messages and pitch change messages that somehow got left behind?

Can't say that I have, Al. I'll check that out this evening when I get home from work... Thanks for the tip.
