Help Installing Sonar Needed (helphelphelphelp)

Okay here goes:

I had an HP pavillion computer with win98 upgraded to winXP...I installed sonar xl onto it, worked fine and dandy......nowww I decided to upgrade computers because I figured hey---how is this turtle of a computer going to keep up?!?!?@!@#.......So I built one running XP pro with AMD Athlon XP 2700....NOW HEre lies the problem....I try to install my sonar xl onto this new computer and IT WILL NOT INSTALL BECAUSE it says Direct X 8.1 is needed to run this program...so I download direct x 8.1 for win98 and change the compatability so it can run on xp pro...it installed. Now I try to run the sonar setup again..and it says once again...direct x 8.1 not found on system....WHYWHYY?!?!? I thought I installed it...humnmmmmm. I even went cakewalk's website and downloaded some kind of patch utility that is supposed to help it install correctly...When I run the utility it asks for the sonar cd-rom to be put in to complete installation..OKAAyyyyyyyy Okaaaaayyyyyyyyy Okaaayyyyyy I sort of dont have that sonar cd-rom anymore because I only have the back up data disc with Sonar XL on it that I made in order to transfer my files from old cpu to new one. I KNOW IT HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY TO INSTALL THIS FREAKING PROGRAM ...WHY IS NOT WORKING....HELP PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE.....THANKS IN ADVANCE

How could you install SONAR onto XP if you didn't have the CD-ROM? You can't install off backed-up data... Besides, XP has DirectX 8.1 out of the box. The patch you refer to from Cakewalk's website is to allow you to successfully install SONAR if DirectX 9.x is already on the system.

Please explain a little more clearly -- what did you try to install from? Why don't you sort of have that CD-ROM (the only place I recall it ever asks you for that is if you are installing an upgrade and it can't find the existing installation on your computer)?

datboylamar,

You should always keep your CD Rom of a program that costs soooo much... beside, if you still had the instruction manual it says that it installs DirectX 8 or is it 8.1 (I'm at work)

Lightbulb

Had the same problem last week. So you cracked Sonar and can't install it? ;o)

Basically you got to fool your system by renaming your directx version9 to version 8.1

Go in the start menu, run, type regedit and click OK
click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
click on software
click on microsoft
click on direct x

You will see the version 4.09.00.90xx something like that
change it to 4.08.01.0810 and it should work.

I posted earlier this week with the same problem. consult there if it doesn't work.

The easiest way to solve the DX8->DX9 issue is found here:
