Hey all.. I just found this forum today and it is killer. Um anyways, I am in a band called Sapientia as vocalist and co/guitar.. I decided to get my own solo project stuff going since I've had about a year of experience by now using Cool Edit Pro, Sound Forge and other progz (so a year or so of recording experience of any kind). I've never had a ton of money for equipment but if you listen to the song I have here and I tell you the only mic I used was a cheap $20 pc mic, you may be surprised.. For percussion and samples I used D-Lusion DrumStation and Rubberduck. here's the URL.. http://www.mp3.com/207

Well done...wonder what it would sound like with a really faithful mic?....and maybe a little more dramatic bass (maybe just an eq adjustment)....I really enjoyed it.....gibs

Flugle - Thx.. That's the funny thing, If I had way better equipment it would sound 100 times better but I think if you can get a decent sound out of crappy gear you're not doin too bad for yourself. For the guitar part I used my favorite Gibson Epiphone SG which I bought in mint for 300 (Canadian) at a hock shop last fall. I love the feel of those things.. umm.. it was tuned to C I believe and dropped the E to a D. let's see.. The distortion was a result of a BOSS GL-100 (I think? I don't have it here right now) processor, going into (now this is the funniest part) my Samick SM-60RC. We have a marshall stack but I don't feel like lugging it down the street and into my basement every time I want to record something, na mean? Cause we practice every other day at our drummer's. the micing technique is especially important when you're using a PC microphone, you can't direct mic it or you get a real sharp annoying high end. So I had to do more of a "room mike".. I also find when you are going for a thick wall of guitar you want to use different distortion and move the microphone, because you get different characteristics and thus a more full sound. As for the bass guitar, that's the least of my concerns, I don't have a real bass amp so I don't expect to get a perfect sound. I just borrowed a friends cheap piece of crap bass. One of these days I'll hook up some serious gear. Finally have a job!

haha and oh I forgot to mention.. the "bass playing" before the distortion comes in? That's not even a bass at all, just my clean SG processed down one octave.. hahaha

The stuff after that is a real bass though.
