Will applying the 3db boost/cut in any way degrade a track?

...but boosting certainly has the potential to degrade the sound of a track - especially if you push it into clipping!

It will also raise the noise floor 3db as well. May or may not be a problem.

Ah...I didn't even think of that.

I'm having some problems with some acoustic upright bass tracks. The recording was hot (but not clipping) and really overpowers the other tracks unless the fader (no, not in the console view! ) is pulled waaaaay down. So, I'm reducing by 3 db's and that really seems to help. I don't like having the gain really low on a track and the reduction seems to take care of that.

What's the difference?
The only one I can think of is one may be pre-effect insert.

Well I'm really not sure if there is a difference. That's why I defer to the gurus!

So, you're saying that pulling the fader way back is pretty much the same as applying the 3db cut? If there's no difference I'll do that.

I prefer to use the fader simply for the reason that I have this strange fear of doing anything to my tracks that can't be undone. If you save after doing a -3db, when you come back you lose the ability to undo the changes to the wave. by using the fader, I can always push it up or down. This may not even make any sense, but I'm kind of a wierd guy.
