Nothing, as music equipment goes.
But I picked up a really cool double-8 film projector once. It cost couple of bucks, I think.

I picked up a vintage 40"s era Slingerland drum kit for $15. It had been painted over so the collector value was ruined. I had planned to re-finish it, but never could find the time. I sold it for $150 to someone who would give it a good home. I also picked up about $300 worth of mic/guitar cables for $10. A Kustom amp for $15. Some old mic's, etc)
I had a friend find a Gretch guitar for $25 (actually his 10 year old kid saw it and went home and told dad) it was something like a Country Gentelman that was worth about $1,000. Mostly I've found some great old vinyl recordings (in particular old Miles, Cole, etc.) |

A DX-7 II for eight pezzutos? Amazing. Really amazing. I bought a whole garage once and before I took it home, it burned down. Just my luck. Green Hornet ![]() |

1958 Fender double-neck stand-up slide for $85. I could have bargained lower--no one knew what the heck it was--but I already felt like a thief and just paid their asking price. I think we all deserve at least one good deal in our musical searches.

How about at a thrift shop?
Just about a week or so ago, I picked up two vintage Zildjian cymbals from the 1960's, an 18" dry ride and a 16" dark crash both in excellent condition, no nicks or keyholing, just real dirty and tarnished. $15.00 for both of them. (they cleaned up real purty )At a garage sale I bought a vinyl album by a group called "Atilla" (a sort of heavy metal group from the early 70's that came out on stage and played in "dark ages" armor.) The music really sucks! BUT the keyboard player in the group was a fellow by the name of Billy Joel. I went to high school with him and was friendly with a couple of the guys in his first goup "The Hassles" and the guitarist in his early "Piano Man" years was an old buddy of mine. I figure that there has to be some blackmail value in this album. Wouldn't you like to see pictures of Billy Joel dressed up_in leather armor and furs trying ever so hard to look like Conan the Barbarian? Paid a buck for the album (I overpaid).

I never scored big at garage sales. (maybe I should get out more)
But my drummer's girlfriend walked in the other day with an SM58 she found at a yard sale, and asked us if it was worth the $1 she paid for it. We plugged it in on the spot, and it worked perfectly. (of course, they're indestructible, right?) And my sister found a Gibson prototype guitar, only a handfull made, (with a Firebird body, but different electronics, on board compressor and expander) for $40. It appraised at about $8-900. I don't care for the feel of it (it's about a block long) but it sounds incredible.

Just this past weekend I scored a Pioneer RT-707 reel to reel 2 track deck with 12 reels Maxell tape. Excellent condition, very little head wear, direct drive (no dried out belts) and weighs a ton. Got the guy down to $16. After looking at EBay prices I think I did OK.
Also this past weekend yard sale.... Simmons SDS-8 Electronic Drum unit with not all the pads, one missing. It works - $10. Pretty cool sounds out it. The guy threw in a small Peavey guitar amp that didn't work for free. Every pot was broken...I think it did a dive off a table. Fixable I think. Others: TEAC A2300SD reel to reel deck - $10 AKAI 4000DS reel to reel deck - $12 Fender Squire Telecaster w/case and Crumar Perfomer Synth - $70 for both. Old Baritone horn - $25 w/case - sold on EBAY $275 Thrift store finds: Kay MK-4902 MIDI controller like new - About $2 Casio SK-1 - About a $1 The wife has really started to dread when I go out Saturday mornings lookin' for deals.... |

I have the buddy that makes his living buying musical instuments at yard sales... then sells them to music stores at many times... AN ENORMOUS profit...
One of his classic finds: He spies and older looking tweed guitar case at a yard sale in nowhere Iowa. Asks the person what it is... He says, just an old guitar... He opens the case... It's a '57 Fender Strat that look like it was never played. He then asks the guy... how much??? The guy says... how about $80? My buddy says(yes he has balls)... If you take $60 it's sold... the guy takes the $60 and he gets the guitar! WOW! He then sells the guitar at a popular Minneapolis vintage guitar store for $12,500. All in all... he cosidered it a good ($60) investment.... the dweeb! Shred |
