SP Technology Timepiece 2.0

Hey there everybody. I am new to this forum and I am here because I am looking for some information or opinions. I am looking to buy a new pair of speakers and have been checking a few people out over the past few months. I just saw a review for a new product in Pro Audio Review magazine that I picked up from Guitar Center... there is a set of speakers in there from a new company called SP Technology. The model that was reviewed is called the Timepiece 2.0. I was wondering if maybe someone has these or has auditioned them and maybe has an opnion. I can't seem to find much information on them other than their website and the article... and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. If anyone is interested in checking them out I will post the link for you here. http://www.4sptech.com. I don't understand all the lingo on their site and was hoping if someone could put it all in terms that can allow me to make a better decision. Thanks in advance for any help I recieve.

How much are they and can you hear them anywhere? Monitors are the last thing I would buy without hearing them first.

Can't judge without hearing them but they don't look especially good IMO, particularly for $3000.

I haven't heard them, but I've read great things about them.

On the other hand, I've also heard very very very good things about Genelecs, too. You might wanna check those out for a (slightly) cheaper solution.

Just buy a pair of Yorkville YSM-1 passives; they'll do you until you are recording stuff in the 3000 dollar range of quality.

Just check this site for comments about the Yorks. For the money, they can't be beat.

They sell them as actives, too:

The plusses of having actives is that the amps are perfectly matches for the speaker.

I still need to get rid of these m1s and pick up some yorkies.

Well I don't like to repeat myself, I've been around this block a few times, so I'll just list a few things for you.

- Greatly reduced differential (the variance between both speakers). Main advantage is improved sound stage, but transients will also show benefits. Approximately 5 times better matching over passive speakers.

- Greatly improved damping factor. It's somewhat hard to explain this so you're gonna have to read up about it if you're interested.

- Bi-amped drivers. This has many little benefits. Most significant is the issue of a dedicated amplifier per unit. Typically, on a passive speaker, if you have a lot information around the spectrum (bass, mids, highs), the upper frequencies will lose out on all available headroom and generally lose their 'dynamics' so to speak. Which can cause muffled voices, blurred hats, etc.
It may appear to sound fine in itself, but it won't be when compared to an active system which will effortlessly reproduce the entire spectrum. Look at it this way, an amp must drive an entire passive speaker, whereas an amp in an active speaker only needs to worry about half of the spectrum with absolutely no passive components in it's line.

- No possibility of inductor saturation, simply because there are no inductors. This translates to virtually no THD at it's maximum amplitude.

- The ability to integrate onboard modules, such as EQ presets, clip warnings, various protection mechanisms such as over-excursion and over-power.

- Increased efficiency. (requires less power to reach the same amplitude)

Perhaps the best thing is the cost efficiency. An active crossover will outperform a passive crossover at any price range. So a $400 active speaker has the potential to outperform a $4000 or more passive speaker at a fraction of the price.

That's more or less all of it from the top of my head.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know there were so many differences (even if I don't know what half of those were ).
