Compressor before or after the preamp while recording bass with DI?
Hi,
This is what I have: SansAmp bass DI ADR Compex compressor.... Spectrasonics preamp/eq with line in and direct out Creamware A16 Ultra AD/DA interface Would you put the compressor before the preamp or after? Hans, www.hagen.nu |

stick it after the pre.
actually just stick it all together in the order you have it in your post.

Put the compressor *after* the preamp, not in the order of your post. A DI will typically output signal at mic level, so you need to get that up to line level before sending it to the compressor.

SonicAlbert,
Should I put the DI into the mic plug then? |

the XLR output (oops almost wrote XML) is balanced low-Z while the 1/4" output is unbalanced low-Z.
i use the 1/4" output when i have a short (3' cable) connected between my Sansamp and RNP mic-pre. i use the XLR output when i have the DI sitting on top of my amp on the other side of the room (12' room). |

I tried the setup this afternoon. Had some problems getting the levels right. I took the signal out from the Sansamp XLR to the Spectrasonics line input and then to the Compex. Finally, it was put into a Creamware A16 Ultra AD/DA. Think I have some problems with "balanced here and unbalanced there"....same with the cables...any ideas?
However, I got a real nice bass sound just putting the Rickenbacker through the Spectrasonics, the Sansamp was turned off, sounded better that way...nothing more...Hmmm I will have to look deeper into the problem, but the song today will stay as it is. Yesterday I tried the Compex like this: Sansamp XLR to the Compex and then to my Digimax hi Z. Sounded ALOT better than going straight into the Digimax hi Z input. Wish I could use the Compex after the Spectrasonics, have to find out how.... Hans Hans |
