It's a good album. The thing I notice first and foremost about it is the *sound*. I think it's worth getting into the album just for the sound he gets on it.

The songs are well-written, but the words don't jump out and get your attention. But the sound does - you just go into that sound and get lost in it. It's got layers. There's a picture of him singing with two mics taped together. That sums it up for me - it's layers and layers. And he makes it sound good.

I have to totally agree. I am hypnotized by Lanois' solo work. His production for others is flawless too, but when applied to his own sound it is like honey, real honey, not saccharine or corn syrup like David Foster .
What has always hit me hardest and deepest with Lanois' production (esp. on Shine) is that he can put a roaring throbbing distorted electric guitar in a song and make it sound soothing . Another producer (who learned his chops with Lanois) who does a lot of the same is Malcolm Burn...check out Charlie Sexton's album "Under the Wishing Tree", or Lucinda Williams "Essence" produced by Burn.
