Question Whats a good preamp?

Okay i'm still in the process of building the recording portion of my studio. The mic i plan on getting is the audio technica 3035 and right now i'm looking for a high quality preamp. I'm not really on a budget because i feel that if i want to make good music that the quality should be nice from the start and plus i'm not in a rush to get everything. Thanks

Whats a good preamp?

A good preamp is a device that amplifies the mic signal cleanly and without undesireable distortion throughout the frequency range.

use the search or read a bit...that is a stupid question....

If you're "not on a budget", why are you limiting yourself to a 3035????? Get something more heavyweight... such as the ones here --> http://www.mercenary.com/microphones2.html

If you're not on a budget, pick up a Groove Tubes VIPRE. It'll sound great with just about any mic.

Other good choices:
Great River MP2-NV
Crane Song Flamingo
API 3124+ (4 mic pres in 1 unit)

Like Blue Bear mentioned, it might be a good idea to look into a nicer mic as well. Best of luck.

I'm accumulating Rane MLM models when the price is right. They are 19" rack mounts with 4 channels of Burr-Brown preamp ICs. The model 42 mixes to a single line out. The model 82 is channel selectable to A, B, A+B output channels.

My intended use is primarily live recording and/or PA use. For recording purposes, my intent is to mix (up to) 4 drum mics to a single track.

I would spend another $100 and get the AT 4040 instead of the 3035.

Preamps-

Grace 101 $550
FMR RNC $500
Great River MP-1NV $1000
Universal Audio M-160 $1100
Vintech Dual 1272 $1250

Those manufacturers all have websites you can get info. from, and there are some reviews online.

an at3035 is a good mic. i think audio-technica makes great mics. one of the great mic pre designers told me a couple weeks ago that he thinks audio-technica is today what electro voice used to be as far as mics.

anyhow, here are some quality mic preamps that i think would be great for someone stepping up to good sound:

a designs mp-1 or mp-2
great river me-1nv or mp-2nv
fmr rnp
grace 101 or 201

if you'll check my site there are reviews of the one or two channel version of each pre.

Sytek

I have the sytek Pre-amp and I love it. Sounds very solid. The two burr brown channels have a smoother tone. And for the price it is awful hard to beat. the other pre's that are getting emntioned look killer too although I;ve not personlly tried them. If you have a big budget I would suggest somthing like a API, Old School Audio, Neve (amek, or vintage), Hardy, or a universal audio...

I'm dedicated to this music, so you kno i'm going to sacrifise to make good music .. once again thank you guys

Wink

Ozraves (& Blue Bear) have excellent information on their websites to LEARN from BTW. More important than gear,
especially when you're starting out.

It is wiser to contact experts like Fletcher over at www.mercenary.com vs. Guitar Center "clerks" IMO.

I find the Focusrite Trakmaster pretty useful as a mic preamp / channel strip (basic EQ, compression, phantom power preamp).

Good value and very very very clean and transparent.
