new tune

Howdy,

I just finished this and Im wanting to get opinions on the arrangement. Thoughts on the different instruments tones would help too.

Thanks,
Justin

Let me first say that I thought the overall product sounded amazing, very professional. I wish I could get my songs to sound like that.

As for feedback on the mix, I have a few comments. First, I really liked the hand drums in the beginning, and I was a little disappointed not to hear them in the second verse an later in the song. I thought they rounded out the beat well.

Second, I thought the acoustic guitar was too far to the left. This wasn't as emphasized when I listened on speakers rather than headphones, but the right side seemed very dominated by the higher tones like the ride. I think you could duplicate the guitar track and pan the decoy slightly delayed to the right. It would fill in that side of the mix nicely. Or, you may be able to find some other way to balance out the sound.

Lastly, the lead electric is buried under the vocals during the later choruses.

I hope that helps, and thanks for sharing!

I really like the sound on this. You have a big production sound and it is well recorded.

The vocals sounded like they were wavering just a tad on my end...not sure if it is a confidence issue or a recording issue, but sounds like it could be fixed with either multiple takes, or perhaps autotune (if you believe in that sort of thing)

Pretty good song, too.

Nice job overall!

Leavings, I made those changes and brought up the backing vox some.

Powderfinger,

Thanks a ton,

Ill show you mine if you show me yours! Your last track "New Madrid" sounds stunning. Whats your vocal chain including conversion? Im using a SP C1 into a Phoenix Audio DRS-1/ RNC to Delta 1010 (got to get a nice 2 channel AD converter). Guitars are an AT4050 through the same path. Acoustics went through my Raindirk mini mixer with a MK012. I still like your vocal sound better

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it. Im a mediocre singer at best and Im lazy to boot. Youre right about the wavering. I just lack control.

the only thing I didn't like was the vocals seem to drop out of key.. quite a few times.. and they were a little low in a few parts.. great recording otherwise..

I'm running a Marshall MXL 93v into a DMP3 preamp into my Delta 44 card. After that I used a few waves plugins....for compression, de-essing, and reverb.....that's it.

Good stuff. Thanks!

Thumbs up

Nice spread on the mix. Voc's are "wavering " in spots, but good voice. Really fine tune! Thanks..

Nice job, very clean, but it may be lacking a little in the mids. The lack of mids is taking away the energy from the groove. Great stereo spread.

Tex,

Ill have to mess with the mids. I didnt cut any mids except on the distorted guitars. The preamps I use are pretty mid rich so my placement of mics must have been to far away.

Thanks,
Justin

Sounds very nice. You've got a nice voice too. I like the warmth of the harmonies. I use a SP C3 mic, which is essentially the same thing, but multi-pattern, which I don't actually use.

The percussion sounds really nice. For some reason the snare seems to be coming from the right. Either some other element is covering it up in some other balancing area of the stereo field, or it's panned and probably shouldn't be.

Vocal is nice, but loses intonation noticably at times. Maybe retrack those parts when you are at full strength?

Nice radio type song, but maybe with a little more feeling than we usually get from them. Good job.

Sorry...I just noticed you were looking for comments on the arrangement, and we've mostly been critiquing the mix. The arrangement sounds like a good pop arrangement.

I thought the arraingment was well done. You have a good voice. The vocals could come up a bit on the Chorus's. Its just about radio redy. Just a few loose ends in the mix.

Sluice,

Thanks for your comments. I am going to fix the vocal issues. The percussion parts through the beggining has a snare in it. Thats a drum loop. Do you mean the snare seems to come from the right through there or after the real drums come in?

Thanks,
Justin

When the real drums come in, the snare seems to lean to the right. If you have it centered, then it's probably something competing with it in the left. Unless of course I'm imagining it. Which is always a possibility.

Sluice,

The snare is dead center. It could be a frequency issue which Im too lazy to try and find

I liked it. Only thing I would change would be to lose the distorted guitar chords in the chorus, it's taking away from the vocal and doesn't serve any purpose anyway - this should be left alone as an acoustic tune IMO.

Lynx,

I think If I stayed true to myself I would never add distorted guitars. How would you get more "drive" than, in a chorus? Add a couple more acoustic backing tracks?

Thanks,
Justin
