Yes. Mellinia Media is high end. I'd put it in the Avalon catagory, maybe a step above.
I found a local dealer here for them and was able to convince the dealer to loan me the 8 channel version pre-amp.
http://www.mil-media.com/docs/products/hv3d.shtml

It is an awesome pre-amp! Super clean, totally uncolored, very true sounding, Class A discrete.
The only draw back I saw to it was the way you have to dial in the gain. Its in stages. Like, turn this knob for 0-20dB, press this switch for 20-40dB, and press both of these buttons for 40-60dB, then fine tune it with this rotary knob.

Now, that 8 channel pre is the ONLY piece of MM equipment I have used. I've never used or even heard the SST1 that you're looking at, but I would expect the build and sonic quality of MM line to be similar.

A channel or 2 of MM would be wonderful.
Hard to throw rocks at that stuff.

I think the 2 are going to be so close together that it really comes down to personal preference.

There are things I don't like about the MM, and likewise with the Avalon. The dislikes have to deal with functionality more so than sonic quality.

If money were no object, I'd probably pick the MM line. But that's me, and I'm a rebel.

did you read into the specs on the "origin"? it has variable tube or solid state at every stage. that would give you endless flexibility. you could have a solid state pre with a tube compressor, etc. seems like if you had a rack full of these, that would be all you would ever need. cept maybe more money in the bank after you empty your acount on these.

Yeah. They're very functional.
Like I said, I haven't heard the SST1 though.

Why don't you buy one and bring it over!!

When I went to school my teacher was trying one of those out and we got to use it to record a few bands. It's pretty.

Yeah. It is. Real pretty.
I just didn't like the gain switches. Not a deal killer though.

C) Martech MSS-10 ... if money were no object... IMNTLBFHO, it's the largest, clearest, coolest of the "transparent sounding hi-end mic-pre" club.

If money is an object... I have found the Avalon to be quite a bit more musical sounding than the Millennia... as always, YMMV.

For recording microphones for The Listening Sessions CD's we use the Millennia HV-3D. We pretty much had our pick of any mic pre on the market - and compared the HV-3 against many other high-end pres – and felt the HV-3 mic pre gives the most accurate representation of the actual microphone. We also regularly use the HV-3D on recording sessions and it's definitely become the go-to pre for a lot of applications in the studio.

If you're looking at the Origin STT-1, then you also might consider the new Millennia TD-1 - which is running around $1K.

Well, if you wanna drive up from Austin to Dallas, you can play around with the SST-1 Origin at our place, and hear it side by side with the Great River MP-2NV.

Next time I'm in Dallas, I might just take you up on that offer.
I'll let you know ahead of time.
