for how long can you leave a B1 or any similar mic plugged in with phantom power ON?

i just got mine a few days ago and i'd like to know for how long you can leave those mics switched on with phantom power ON?

is it okay to turn phantom power off when i'm not recording or would it be better to turn the mixer completely off?

Always turn the PP off before turning your mixer off (that way when you turn the mixer on - it is off) and never plug a condenser (or probably a dynamic either - to tell the truth) in while PP is on.


As for duration, I personally wouldn't leave it plugged in and running for days on end. Years ago I used to just leave it all running 24/7/365.....but that was just stupid.

I have an SM57 and I am going to get a B1. The 57 doesn't require phantom but the B1 will. Is it okay to have them both plugged in at the same time with phantom on? Will this damage the 57 or affect the signal?

just to reassure you paul, dynamic mics won't be hurt by phantom power. they don't need it, but they don't mind it either.

I have never heard of anything regarding a 'lifespan' of a condenser so I do not beleive that there is any reason why you couldn't leave it on 24/7. Usually the reason why they tell you not to leave your condenser mics out all the time is dust and moisture, not wearing them out.

It's a good idea to put the mic away when not using it so dust and etc doesn't trash it.

i usually just put the foam hat on the mic when i'm not using it. =)

Now i'm confused. I wanted to use my shure dynamic at the same time as my condenser through a TF Pro P3 pre-amp. The TF forum insisted that the PP would damage the dynamic mic.

Who's right, who's wrong?

The dynamic will not be harmed by the Phantom power unless the cable you are using is miswired or shorted (one signal pin shorted to the ground pin). If your cable is good, there is no need to worry.

Hmmmm.. Not sure to be honest. The dynamic has a 1/4" jack and goes into a standard line imput.

Phantom power is only available on XLR 3 pin connections. Line inputs have no use for it.
