eq effects on vocals

Hi i have a yamaha md8 and i plugged the effect return lead into a spare channel on mixdown.its interesting how you can change the vocal sound for the better with a bit of panning and eq.and using some delay.I do live recordings of our rehersals. is this a common thing to do? I dont read too much about how to do things, but listening to the results the vocals seem much fuller.so much to learn but i'm in no rush im only 36.shit im old??

Not sure about the MD8, but those of us with full consoles group the effects out, then bring back in through the effects returns or into another channel.......
