EV RE38 on kick?

What are y'all's thoughts about using an RE38 on kick drum? good? bad?

i've done some searching and see that it's basically an RE20 with some "preset eq options"......just wanna know if it'll work well on a kick drum as well as being a good vocal mic.

just passing on second hand info here: but i understand that it is great.

i have used an re20, and of course it is great on BD. very tight sounding. not much boom. (if that is what you want) one of my favorite kick sounds is re20 inside d12 outside.

i would imagine that with some proximity effect the re38 would be a "best of both worlds" kick mic. the punch of the re20 with some boom from the proximity...

plus it looks cool.

thanks

thanks eeldip--that's more or less what i was suspecting.....and the "looks cool" part is always a bonus.

basically i'm trying to decide between that and the Sennheiser e602. i KNOW the senn will do a good job and will be a bit of a "road warrior". the EV i'm not so sure i want to take with me to gigs where i have to provide my own mics.

i'm leaning towards the EV, as i've been focusing on acquiring mics that excel at multiple things, and we all know that the EV is a spectacular vocal mic. i'm just wary of taking it to gigs--maybe i'll spring for the $50 CAD for those situations.

any info/wisdom that others have is always appreciated! :-)

i would get it in a second over the sennheiser.

the 38 is also a vocal mic, guitar cab mic, bass cab mic, etc.

the re20 is a real standard... and this is just a slight redesign. i see no reason to get it.

i have been meaning to pick a 38 up cause i know where one is sitting there for pretty cheap. i hope you dont take mine.

Wink you might be upset

b/c if yours was at a certain well-known used gear website and has been there for quite a while, then i got "yours".

i even talked him down $30 to $170 (plus $10 shipping), so $180 for an RE38 with case, stand mount and the special little screwdriver they give you for adjusting the eq patterns ain't too bad. not bad at all.

so.....sorry eeldip. i'll let you know how it sounds.

I wouldn't pass on the E602 so quickly. It's probably not as versatile as the EV but it's damn good at what it does. It's also an amazing bass cab mic. It's great at handling High SPL low frequencies with clarity and consistency.

sorry bout that

i've been lookin at that re38 for what, 4 months now? longer? and it's just been sitting there. taunting me. teasing me. begging me to take it home. i remember your posts about it, and Tonewoods', too, especially about it being an underrated kick mic. and while i was always in the market for a kick mic if a good one came along at the right price, buying a new one was always backburnered as there was always something else coming up that i needed more....more 58s or similar, a pair of 603s, a mixing board, monitors, you name it. plus the fact that i don't really care for the beta 52, the pro25 or the akg d112, so my choices started to prune themselves.

i've always REALLY liked that senn e602, though, although i had a hard time ponying up 2 bills for what appears to be a one trick pony (haven't heard it on anything other than kick, so i don't really know). but i DO like it on kick and when i get a "locker" (see the PS on my "shoebox" below) that can afford me the luxury of a dedicated kick mic, the e602 will be the one. for now, though, i need to stick to mics that do more than one thing well.

anyway, so now i've got a gig next weekend and i need a kick mic.....and i'll be damned if i rent (again) that piece of shit beat-to-hell pro 25 from the local shop here. i didn't want to blow $50 on the CAD only to find it's wasted cash when i hate it or find it lacking in a month and start looking for something "better".

all the while still hoping to find a great price on an e602 (and having just missed the blowout full compass had on the grammy'd ones) basically it came down to a new e602 or the re38. and since the re38 is a mic that's got more "all-around" usability, i figure that if i hate it on kick, it'll at least be a pretty good on vocals or amps. at least.

boils down to i had the cash and i had to pull the trigger on something....turns out this was it.

and hey, if i hate it on everything, you'll be the first to know eeldip.

vociferously yours,
wade

PS--funny that now the "best" mic in my "locker" (try shoebox) is my "kick mic"....said shoebox also contains 2x sm58, 1x shure 545 (love it!), 2x senn e835, 1x sp b1, and 2x mxl 603s. gettin there. next up is a v67g for "cheap flattering vocals", and then a real LDC or another couple good dynamics (like some of those 421s or 441s tubedude's always alerting us to). *sigh* then it'll be time to address my pres and room...does it never end? ;-) like huey said, step by step....rung by rung. thanks again for all of the steering y'all do. a person can go far if they take some time to listen to what's being said around here.
