mic pre + 424

is there any way hooking up a mic pre to an input on an original 424 will increase the quality of sound, or is it just another break in the signal and basically only going to detract if anything?

What is this 424 you speak of?

A decent (or better) mic pre will make a BIG difference with a Tascam 424.
Keep the portastudio's mixer settings at "unity gain" and connect the
XLR output of the pre, to the XLR input of your 424.
Raise the gain slowly to protect your hearing and any equipment BTW.
