A/D converters

I have an Alesis HD 24 and need an A/D question answered.

If I'm coming out of my preamp to the 1/4 inputs on the HD24 the signal is converted to a digital signal in order to be wrote onto the Harddisk. So what is the advantage would using an A/D to send an ADAT lightloop signal to the recorder. Would I get a higher sample rate or no gain at all?

Thanks Guys...........

People buy externer a/d converters mainly for their quality. I have no experience with the hd24, but i'm sure there's a step up as there are some that cost a couple thousand dollars a channel. Depending on the converter, you can choose several bit rates and sample rates to go into your recorder via lightpipe. Your signal chain would just be out from the pre into the converter, then out of the converter into the recorder.

hope this helps,
Brandon

Another advantage is that it may increase the number of simultaneous recording tracks, especially if it goes through the ADAT lightpipe.

Most A/D-D/A converters use one of like 4 conversion chips... the difference in the units are the analog electronics and the stability of the clock. With better clock stability, better aliasing filters, better headroom and phase coherency in the converter, the better your audio will sound, and the better the size of the soundfield' with which you can work will be.

I used to have echo audio units and U replaced them with the MOTU 828MKII and I'm very pleased...the sound is MUCH better.. wide open as compared to thin and closed with the echo units..

danshi is on a distinguished road
Alesis HD 24 already have A/D circuit . If you want to increase audio quality , you must buy an A/D converter better than the A/D circuit of Aleses HD 24 . These A/D converter is expensive .
