Carter is da man.

Is there any dispute that Carter is the best drummer out there right now?

I think it's very much disputeable. However, is Carter an incredible drummer? Yes.

Define "best".

Best at what?

Keeping rock solid time?

Chops?

Etc?

Yeah, I like his drumming a lot, too.

But there are SO MANY great drummers out there right now, more than ever before. I don't think I could point to one as being "the best". They each have something special.

He is the best at coming up with a beautiful groove in the studio, and then on stage playing it exactly as it sounded on the record. His consistency is amazing, every little note exactly the same every night. The fact that he can play double bass without it becoming the central focus of what he is doing (Mike Portnoy). He is still able to play things he learned 20 years ago (unlike Neil Pert) He just rocks my face man. Just wondering what all you thought.

This is going to sound very "touchy feely" and very "60's" and "greeting card", and that's really unlike me.

Yes he is a great drummer. There are many great drummers including some none of us have heard of yet. Isn't that enough? What is this need we seem to have to name "the best", "the greatest"? Can't you just enjoy a person's skill at doing and participating in the creative act? In you last response you praised Carter (who I think is incredible, and also wasted on the music he's playing with) and in the same sentence, you trashed Mike Portnoy and Neill Peart (who happen to be great drummers although Mike Portnoy's playing is not to my taste.) Dave Weckl is a phenominal drummer, but the type of jazz he plays in not my taste either. I can enjoy all of them as great craftsmen and talented musicians even though I may not want to listen to the type of music that they are playing. How about Steve Gadd as a solid incredible drummer? There are just SO MANY. I enjoy them all, and learn from them all. And yes Carter Beauford is one of my very favorites.

This is all I got, I figured that this post would be bombarded with insults and cussing. I just really like DMB and Carter, there is no best drummer, just wondering what all of you thought. List your fav. drummers.

Carter is not wasted in DMB......you may not like their music but the different styles allow him to adapt to each one. Nothing sounds the same.

Where would he fit in any better.

I look up to rock drummers like Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins more than anyone because for me, I love the way that their drumming is a backbeat to the music. I don't know what it is but I get annoyed sometimes where it sounds like the drummer is doing all he can to make the listener notice. Hawkins and Grohl lay out great beats that can be songs on their own but without having to stretch for it to sound good with the music.

I'm sorry if I sounds like I'm attacking a favorite group of your's. I do listen to DMB and I do enjoy their performances. The thing that I noticed though is that if you remove the very creative rhythm section from the group what you'd be left with is a very mundane (yet somewhat enjoyable) folk/rock/cajun/blues group. The dynamics given to the music by the drums, and bass bring it into another realm. They are not just augmenting the music, they're clearly in the driver's seat.

I would love to hear Carter Beauford in a wild R&B, Prog Jazz or heavy rock group. Even in a "new" big band type of group. He's so damn good the group he's in should be called the C B Band.

Lol rim, he used to be in a fusion band about 20 years ago. If I find the name, I will post it.

If you think just hearing him play on DMB albums is good, check out his DVD Under the Table and Drumming. Just watching him, and all the little things he does to accent the music is crazy.

It is an amazing dvd, and in there you can see the fusion band he was in about 20 years ago! He can play anything and make it sound good!

Carter is one of my favorite drummers, no doubt about that, but does anyone else think he (and sometimes the rest of the band)overplays a bit?
For example the fingerpicked guitar verses in "The space Between" where he plays between the ride and the hi-hats, and Lessard is doing some glissando stuff on the bass, and DM is picking constant 8th notes-- I think that's a little overkill. Feel free to disagree!

I dont think the space between and dave matthews band should even be mentioned in the same sentence. That music on "everyday" was written before the rest of the band showed up. The rest of the band cant be held resposible for any of that stuff...No offense dave!!!

Yeah, I think Dave was going through rehab at the time Everyday was being produced, but the band said they were happy with the record.

Interestingly in a fairly recent article in one of the drum mags.(maybe Modern Drummer, or maybe Drum, I can't remember) Carter Beauford himself talks about simplifying his playing and using less flourishes and just maintaining the groove. In a way, I'm real sorry to hear that, because one of the main reasons that I personally listen to DMB is to hear how Carter is going to wail away on his fills and solos and really bend the rhythms.

I've only seen the dvd extra of him playing on the Neil Peart "Work in Progrss".That was an awesome performanced. I'm intrigued by the way he holds his sticks, right at the very end. I'd be afraid of losing control over them that way, but it's painfully obvious that HE doesn't.

For the albums, yes they will be more "radio friendly". But the live albums and the stage shows will still display his amazing talent of percussion and drumming skills.
