can't find the hole!
I am going to be recording my drummer again very soon, looking for a couple pieces of advice:
1) where should we put the hole in the kick drum...looking for a jimmy eat world type sound 2) Have a B1, B3, 2-SM58, and 4 - Sennheiser e604. I have a mackie 1604vlz pro, and presonus firestation with 2 tube mic preamps built in....thoughts on mic placement? Thats about it for now...THANKS! |

I would cut a hole about 6 inches in diameter (much bigger than that and it eliminates the purpose of having a hole) maybe 2 - 4 inches off of the bottom and left side of the bass drum (IE: Equidistant 2-4 inches from both the side and the bottom). This way, you don't get too much of a clicky sound of the attack and still get that thump that Jimmy Eat World has in their music.

Do you have to have a hole in the resonant head? I have recorded several times with no hole in the head, and like the sound. I would try to find a sweet spot before you cut a hole in a piece of $40 plastic!

I myself do not cut holes in the head either -- I found that the resonant head doesn't contribute much to the tone except for keeping it less boomy (or at least it does that with how low I tune it) but my bass is usually the part of the drums I'm happiest about.

Although, it does make it easier to adjust your pillow, if you got one.
