drums on 2 tracks

hi ppl!

i am currently starting to play around with micing drums (for the first time).

and well i knew this would be a hard issue, as i only have a soundcard with two inputs (so far, and that probably wont change that soon..)

so, at least i have a mixer with 4 mic inputs (yea, if i had been as wise as i'm now, i would have bought at least a 4-track soundcard and a bigger mixer, in the first place.. lol)

and now i was wondering, how the h3ll do i arrange my mics, to b able to do at least some USEFUL panning/blending in the mixing stage?
it may b dumb but i'm pretty clueless.

i plan to record 2 overheads, and at least 1x snare and 1x kick. yea i know this is like the most basic setup u can think of lol..

or does it make no sense at all to think about how to use the 2 tracks, and should i just get my drums right when recording?

umm this turns out being harder to explain than i thought.. lol

I have a similar dilemma by way of the Fostex VF80 (2 inputs). What I do is use my mixer and route my overheads and snare mic (which, I fine tune on the mixer) to the hard left (input 1) so that it records on Channel 1 of my recorder. I then route a clean bass signal hard right onto Channel 2 of the recorder as I find that the bass is usually the mic that needs the most compressing, EQing, etc...

It's pretty flexible though -- I can adjust the levels of the drums during recording time and then save the bass for whenever I feel like it .
