The digital revolution: Our gain!

I think it's finally happening. Small project and home studios are going fully digital. Not only are they using digital recorders (which has been the norm for a while now, making all these Tascam and Fostex multitracks cheap) now they are ditching their analog mixer boards too.

See, nobody wanted them! What, a 16 channel recording mixer (with 32 channels on mixdown, perfect for a 8 or 16 channel studio) and nobody wanted to pay more than $100! Thats just silly...

A 24 channel Tascam WITH METER BRIDE! for $800. Half a year ago, it would have cost you well over $1000, maybe $1500.

Too bad these are on 110V, I can't use them. But the trend in europe seems similar, but lagging behind. Too bad I need to buy new furniture soon.

But still, with this trend, a good 24 channel mixer is coming my way this autumn! And I need it too!

Yep, you're preaching to the choir here. I got my stuff from a radio station "upgrading" to digital. I paid $1250 for about $50,000 worth of gear installed in 1986, actually the ATR 60 was newer than that.

The home guys are doing the same thing. All the used gear stores are trying to unload the stuff just to be free of garbage. What they don't realize is that when everyone comes back around we'll have all their great gear. I predict a huge analog backlash in the next decade. I bet we see TASCAM and Fostex making digitally controlled analog modular multitracks for the consumer market. You know, a raw housing that could be fitted for 1", 1/2" or 1/4" in 2, 8, 16 or 24 tracks. Well maybe not but I bet my ATR 60 skyrockets in price by 2012.

Yeah, I'm all digital right now. I use a computer and an Aardvark Q10 (8 analogs in). My dedicated studio is almost finished. As soon as I make some change I want to get a 1/2" 8 track RR. Hadn't put a lot of thought into it but I figure I can take 8 lines (mics, etc) into the Q10 and send them to the 8 outputs (selectable -10dBv or +4dBu) to the RR. Once the tracks are down I can send them back through the Q10 to the computer. Gotta read my manual again. Whatcha think? Swords back in the scabbards please

Sure man, why not? I would rather see you going in through an analog board and mixing to the computer but having a nice 1/2" tape machine in your setup will be cool and great sounding as well.

I just hope this foolish trend of unloading pretty decent analog gear continues for maybe 2 years or more. Im seeing 1" 16 tracks going for less than my old stupid Yamaha md8. 24 and 32 Channel Tascam boards for $3000 when 5 years ago they were more than $20,000. Neve's are popping up at low low prices.
