midi always sounds like piano

ok, for midi all i use is my controller (evolution MK 249c), an audigy card, reason and pro 53 software.

when i save the files as audio they're fine, when i save them as midi files the playback just sounds like a crappy piano. the beats and the synths are all lost. i have a friend who uses reason too. when he brings his stuff over on disk, the midi does the same thing.

does anyone know what's going on?

Basically you must be sending the MIDI parts all to the same channel, or otherwise you don't have the playback device configured to recieve the MIDI data properly.

You might be saving them as the wrong type of MIDI file. There are two types, I forget which is which, but in one all the MIDI data is put onto a single track, which would certainly have this effect.

Another possibility. When you play the MIDI files, how do you play them? From within Reason? Or from some other application? Are the sounds that you made in Reason accessible as a MIDI instrument from any external applications? (Don't you need ReWire to do that?)
