Electro Voice Microphones

Anybody heard of/have experience with electro voice microphones (models n/d 308a, 308b, n/d 357, pl76, and 611)? Any input anybody has is greatly appreciated...

What are the intended applications?

Horns (trumpet/sax/trombone), Guitar cabs, Bass cab, Drum Set (Kick if the 308b is good for it, or else I'll get an AT Pro25 ($99 at zzounds)), possibly vox. So basically anything, just wanted to know how they are, what they are good for, etc.

not really the same applications as you, but i used an ev357 to mic my harmonica player's vox live a few weeks ago. it worked well enough with his voice that i think i'll pick one up for him if i see one at a good enough price. he's got a kinda strange voice--sm58s and e835s don't really work that well on him (and i've found that one usually works where the other doesn't).

can't imagine that it'll be "great on everything", though. just didn't give me the "versatility vibe" the couple hours i had my hands on it. might be ok on the right guitar cab, dunno.

if any of you have used an re-11, i wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts as well.

Any Sennheiser 421 prior to the current "MKII" model would do a
good job on all those applications.

It would be superior on voice compared to the AT.
The RE11 (or higher grade RE16) doesn't have as much low end sensitivity as you may want on kick.
Don't know how the 308 would be on horns, might be a bit
bright. Good vocal/drum microphone though.

I got a pair of Electro Voice RE11s for $250. i have used them for everything and i love them. i have used them as overheads (not the best but definitly gets a cool sound if you get creative), vocal, acoustic (both at the same time) and just as a random instrument microphone. i love these mics and never go to a session without them. they can really add a good vintage (not low fi) sound to your recording. i am not saying they are for everyone but i love them. i think one of the best recordings i have ever done was acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time using just one (maybe two) of these and the result was gorgeous and needed no EQ.
