if i listen to my vocal track, there's some reverb
(probably from my untreated walls) and distortion when i sing out loud..

i'm gonna do something about the reverb thing soon,

but is there supposed to be distortion?

No. There is NOT supposed to be distortion.

Are your sure it's the Studio Projects B1 mic distorting and not something else in your audio chain instead? If it is the B1... and sense the mic is new, I'd just return it to whoever you bought it from and ask them for a new one that works.

I seriously doubt you are clipping a B-1 with vocals. Please describe everything this mic is plugged into, 'cause it sounds like you're clipping *something*.-Richie

Unless there is some issue with the phantom power supply.

If you feel the need, take the mic back........BUT get the store to try it out WHILE YOU ARE THERE. Show them EXACTLY how it plays up on your voice..............if it still is dodgey in the store, then at least you know it was the mic, and they have heard what it is doing.

Don't return the mic until you are sure there's something wrong with it. I think DJL's way jumping the gun here. The B-1 produces a much hotter signal than an SM57, and the pres in a Behringer mixer are easy to clip. Turn the channel volume down, and back off from this mic a bit. You can use an SM57 anywhere from 8" to swallowing it. With a condenser, try 8-12" and turn the channel gain down. If you try to use a condenser mic as if it were a dynamic, you can clip anything, especially a Behringer mixer. Lots of things sound like crap when you don't know how to use them. Have you got a pop filter in front of this mic? You may not need one with an SM57, but you absolutely will with a condenser. This is a whole different animal, and I'm betting there's nothing wrong with this mic except you don't know how to use it yet.-Richie

Iv'e got pretty much the same setup as you, delat 2496, b1, sm57 behringer mixer. I have to set the gain pretty low on the channel compared to the 57.

That should be ok... if you got a faulty mic, you should be able to return it. If not... you can still email Studio Projects http://www.studioprojectsusa.com/index.html and they'll tell you where to send it for repair.

A rock singer who's very loud can produce more than 150 dB at a distance of one or two inch.

That's way to loud for a B1 and for a Neumann as well.

A dynamic mic has kind of a "built in limiter" and can handle more SPL (sound pressure level) than most condensers.

If you are not a very loud singer and you use a distance of a feet from the mic, it shouldn't distort at all.

Turn your gain to it's minimum and let us know what happens.

ah!!!

39 dollars?!

i tried with the gain and the volume..

and.. my conclusion is.. that it's no good..

if i turn down the gain, it sounds like the vocal's buried in the music, and when i raise the volume on my cooledit to where it's tolerable, i get that same distortion again..

i Am singing loud on the high parts.. so maybe i'm singing too loud?? is that possible?

(the distance was somewhere around 10~12 inches as someone in this thread told me..)

soooooo

i guess i'll wait and try out some more things for the next few days and it that doesn't work, i'll have to return it..

So was it user error or a crappy B1 mic?

Just pull-off the two little round plastic caps covering the bolt on the swivel part of the clip and tighten the bolt.
