Track mud build-up from mic choices?

I have seen mention of certain preamps being able to stack more tracks than others. That is, certain pres build up too much in the lower mids etc., when the tracks reach a certain number, and others do not.
How about mics? Can some mics handle more stacked tracks (recorded with the same mic) than others, before undesireable sonic build-up occurs? And if so, what character of mic should the home recordist of humble means seek out to help with this problem?

From my limited experience, it seems that I can record more tracks with an sm81 without muddying things up, than I can with LD condensers. (then again, might be my pre, eh?)

Usually, something more on the neutral side will be preferable. Stuff with a lot of freaky peaks and valleys will have a way of piling up and sounding harsh and/or muddy.
