Ampeg SVT: buy it or no?

The bass player in one of the bands I'm in is moving away pretty soon, and he's reluctantly decided to sell his Ampeg SVT head. He said he'd be willing to let it go to me for $550. Having heard the thing every practice for about 2 1/2 years now, I know the thing is in nice shape and sounds great. Am I right in thinking that $550 is too good a deal to pass up? Would I regret letting this slip by in the future?

This would be for live use as well. I don't think I wanna tour with a J-station...

You're gonna use it for bass?
I had one many, many years ago and it's a truly great bass head. But it is voiced for bass, I don't think it would work very well for guitar.

No, it'd definitely be a bass amp. Our bass player doesn't have a decent amp of his own. I'd still need to find a cabinet, though.
