FxDelay left and right ....

Someone mentioned that you can have your audio track panned to the left and the delay to the right making the vocal thicker. I try to use Cakewalk's FxDelay (delay left & right etc.) but am unable to achieve that. I can have some echo type effects but the audio just doesn't give me the stereo effect. The sound just come from where ever I set the pan position to be. Do I have to record the audio in Stereo first?

What I do is clone the track and then drag the right hand track a few milliseconds. It definitely thickens vocals. And its great with guitars, especially solo acoustic geetars

What you basically need to do is to first track in mono. Then you need to manually set the track to stereo (check the track-field). Then the source will be mono, but it will playback in stereo letting stereo-effects playback in stereo.

I knew something like that needs to be done.
I'll give it a try. Thanks a lot, moskus.

I also appreciate Paul's clone advice.

Is there some way (I could swear I read about it once) to have more control over the drag? Something like hold down some key while using arrow keys to move in small increments? Or am I all hyped up on goofballs?

Thanks,
-Jeff

No, there is no way to do that while draging the clips

But there's a trick to do it. First, turn off "Snap to Grid" (key N) in track view. Select the clip, Press Ctrl and <-- or --> to zoom. By zooming the clip wider, you can drag-and-drop in more precission. Use the mouse to drag the clip.
Or...

Select the clip, right click, Clip Properties... and put a new start value in the field. Click Ok. That's it... precission

4ever, There's also a trick to make the sound more "full". Record a track mono. Clone so you have now two identical audio track. Click Process --> Audio effects --> Cakewalk --> Time / Pitch scretch. You only have to decrease the pitch by -0.20 applied to the second track. Done ? Good... now play 'em both Wiiide...

That's cool, but I need wider, Jaymz

Pan them hard L & Hard R.

Okay... but I said I realy need it wider and fatter, Jaymz

Okay... clone the original track once again. So you have total three track. Let the first track alone, centered. The second is decreased -0.20 pitch. Pan it hard left. Third track is increased +0.20 pitch. Pan it hard right. Adjust the second & third volume level compared to the first track. Play 'em together

FYI, small amount of altered pitch won't screw the sound, instead, it gives you "fat" sound effect (chorusing). Combined with delay effect Paul mentioned, you'll get the ticket to next Grammy award for wider & fatter record

Hope it helps

Jaymz

or you could just open a simple delay effect plugin and make one site delayed by like 10 ms and make the signal completely wet. what type of music are you playing? I'd say to double tracks by playing them a second time. It sounds much better and then you don't have to delay. Just make sure you know your songs and can play them the same time twice

Jaymez, you are the god of Sonar! I tried your suggestion on an acoustic guitar track, cloned it twice (making three in total, panned left, right and centre) and then allied + and - 0.2 pitch change. Sounded fantastic. Used with a VST comb filter, it was even better. With delay as well, it was out of this world. Well, a long way from the original simple acoustic geetar, anyway.

Cakewalk should pay you and Dachaytnr to go out on a promo tour

if we play mono track centered, and put stereo plugin in the field, was it what you assumed "stereo" ?

Go to the FX tab in Track View, and look at the bottom of the Aux Busses. You will see a little box with a speaker icon in it. If the box has an "A" in it (the default) the track is set to Automatic and it will play back mono or stereo depending on the data that is in the Track. However, if you click inside the box, you can force it to play mono, or click again to force it to stereo, regardless of what data is in the track.

This is handy on the VMains if you want to test your mix in Mono (although the Icon is located in a different place (All tab or Mix tab to the right of the Pan slider).

See, Clemie, sometimes we actually talk Cakewalk here.

Paul, it must be the new job. Are you learning management-speak or something?

You HAVE to use a VMain on every project. That's where your tracks get summed and played back. Generally this is what is called the Main Out on an analog mixer. Sonar calls them Virtual Mains (VMains) because you can "assign" them to different hardware. For ex., if you had two sound cards installed (or one sound card with multple outputs), VMain A could be routed to 1/2 on Sound Card #1, or changed to 3/4 on Sound Card #1, or routed to 1/2 on Sound Card #2.

Maybe what you meant is you've never used more than one VMain on a particular project??

It's the killer combination of stupidity, memory loss, new job, and the fact that I know nothing about anything

What I meant (although I had forgotten) was that I never use more than one VMain.

There are four things that your know/don't know:

1) Those things that you know you know
2) Those things that you know you don't know
3) Those things that you don't know you know
And
4) Those things that you don't know you don't know

My VMain stupidity falls into category 3). With a bit of 4) as well

Thanks for the clarification Mike.

for delaying one track....(or all tracks on a Vmain)

I dunno if this will help you or not, but I found a plugin (A FREE one, no less!) There are a bunch of free plugins on this page:

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio.htm

but the one I am talking about here is "Sample Slide" They describe it pretty well, but I use it for a use they don't mention, which is delaying one "side" of two (L+R) tracks to help fatten the stereo image. I use it in the fx bin on one track, and you have as precise control over how much to delay it as possible. All the way down to one sample at a time. I usually (right now, anyway) use this to do the delaying while the track is playing. Once I know how much I want to delay it (see pic), I guess I could delete the plugin from the fx bin, and drag it manually, but I have been lazy up till now.

I guess you could also use this plugin to try to hammer out some phase problems, but my skill level ain't there yet in general.

And while I am at it, if anyone understands what the "Bound" plugin on that same page does, could ya fill me in? I haven't got a clue...

i've got the DSPFX suite (not the one that comes with sonar2), and the delay plugin will only show up as mono (and un-pannable) if the sonar track is set to mono.

when i use the DSPFX delay, i set the milliseconds by putting the bpm into analogx's delay calculator.

but WAVES gives you the ability to set the BPMs and note duration in their delay plugin so there is no millisecond calculation.
