I'm new to this and I was wondering do you have to have a console.

I'm going to record one track at a time, my budget is $400 to $500.

Lightbulb another thought

You may want to look into some of the stand-alone recorder. Roland, Boss, Korg.... there are lots of nice ones out there. Some have a flash media card if you really want to transfer to your pc.

In fact others have a usb connection so you can plug them straight into the pc.

Just a suggestion in case you have not considered this cheap yet efficient option.
