Bass Box/Peddle for Recording Advice

Greetings!

I've been plugging my bass directly into my VS-880EX, but I'm unhappy with the sound (typically way too boomy and either too dull or too grindy), and because of the limited 3 band equalizer, I'm stuck trying to EQ the damn signal after its recorded. Does anyone have any advice as to maybe a box or effect peddle that I could plug into on input that would be INEXPENSIVE and fairly versatile for this sort of thing. I don't need to make it sound like a robot or anything ridiculous...just like a smooth bass with a clean signal.

Any advice would be great!

The SansAmp Bass Driver is a good cheap device that simulates a miked bass amp sound. $180. It's overdrive it quite convincing and it's easy to use.

Johnson J-Station $150. Never used it (although I'm thinking of buying one soon). It looks like it has about 5 bass models and many cabinet simulations using modeling technology. EQ, effects, compressor on board. Lots of info. on Johnson's website.

Bass POD. Not exactly cheap but it's a very cool device and the user interface is simple. 15 bass amp models and one preamp model. A few of the effects are good, and it's easy to get a wide variety of sounds for rock, jazz, metal, pop, etc. $350 new, but they are easy to find used on Ebay. The compressor on the Bass POD is excellent. (I own one)

A cheap preamp is another idea, preferably with optical compression. Joe Meek VC3Q or MQ3, ART Tube PAC.

I use the J-Station for that and it works well (it has 3 models)
but the new Bass V-Amp from Behringer is what I'd look at.
I want one and I don't even need it.
