New gear will eventually be junk

Ever get the feelin that some of the gear you have will be junk in a few years. For instance that brand new Alesis HD 20 or that new mackie vls. I dont know but its strange to think that some of the things I spend big money on will be outdated next year. Didnt the blackface adat used to cost 5000 new. Now I think you can get one for 175 on ebay. Some things like fine instraments and high end stuff wont drop in value but I think a lot of my stuff will.

But that is true for everything...Cars, Clothes, Household Appliances, Printing Presses. All you can do is buy the best you can afford in order to get as much use out of it as possible....and just because something isn't worth a great deal doesn't automatically make it useless.

The most striking example is a PC. An amp will still give you good sound in 10 years if well looked after.....where will your PC be in 10 years? Landfill.

Yeah--those neve pres are getting antiquated. If any of y'all have some, I'll buy them from you for....say....one hundred bucks each. My loss will be your gain.

It's definately true that anything digital will not hold it's value. Analog gear usually does (if it was worth anything in the first place).

Just about any digital/computer based gear will devalue quickly. If you buy something made by API, Crane Song, Great River, etc. then you can be sure you've made a good long term investment.

Tex, there are some exceptions to the digital rule,
The Roland SRV-330 has been increasing in value, for example.
There are some other "vintage" reverbs too.
