Recording w/ plugins??

Recently read somewhere that its useless to run plugins on tracks as you record them because plugins only affect the recorded .wav file and not the input signal path (excluding any bussing done)

is this true or false?????


Note: Im using n-track studio. Been trying to get its "live input processing" feature working but havent had any luck.

If you get the "live input processing" feature to work you should be able to add effects, and hear them, while you're recording. The plugins won't make any changes to the wave-forms though, so technically it's pretty useless.
I however like to hear a nice reverb when I'm recording my voice. It somehow feels more natural to sing this way. If you wan't to use input monitoring this way you have to have a soundcard with very low latency. I have a Delta 1010lt with Cakewalk sonar running @ 2ms of latency. The latency shouldn't be much higher than that for input monitoring to be usable.

I think the first line answers it...using live input processing, you can hear the effect but the track being recorded will still be recorded dry...w/ no effect.....right??

Like the reverb example you used...this is what Im wanting to do...but when I hit the "LIP" button I lose my signal until I turn it off again...Ive assumed this was related to latency but havent dug into it...

FIY...running a Audiophile 2496....how do I check what latency I am getting? I never get any skips or delay in my tracks using the settings I have now...(pretty standard settings I think...no real tweaking done)

Yes

I've never used N-tracks, so I don't know how that program works, but if it uses ASIO you can adjust the buffer-settings in the delta control panel.

128 samples = 2ms latency
256 samples = 5ms
384 samples = 8ms

and so on. I think you already know this.

I suspect the problem for you is some settings in n-track and unfortunately I can't help you there.
