C1 with DMP2, distortion common

So i'm using the C1 in combination with a DMP2 Preamp, into my Delta44.

We record screaming vocals in many local bands here in cincinnati. I find that the mic distorts (even with -10db on the mic selected, AND an extra -10db pad in the chain) when the screamer is anywhere between 0-12 in. away from the mic. I have to tell the singer (screamer) to move back at least a foot away...and by then i start to get my terrible sounding basement into the picture...

anyway, are there any tips here? or is this what i get for having no more mic pads? haha.

first let me say that i think your stuff rocks. i'm amazed at what you have been able to accomplish with your gear. i'm a cincinnati boy too, and have been a listener for a while.

as far as screamo goes: i think it's inevitable that the screaming close to the microphone is going to overload the c1. you might have the singer turn slighly away from the it, so the mic doesn't get the full blown sceam, just the sound of it. other than that i'd suggest using one of your dynamics that can handle the load.

yeah, i was just hopin to get that live ass C1 sound though. hmm. I'll try some stuff...anyway i thought it was supposed to have a really high rating for being able to handle high SPLs and all that?? haha.

i have a DMP2 and its famous for overloading.....although the 20db of padding you are using typically does the trick, you may need more....

The C1 is a really hot mic which doesn't help if your preamp does not have a lot of headroom. I'm assuming your using a pop filter and it's not an air pressure problem.

Add another pad if the singer is really belting it out.

yeah it's probably not an airpressure issue. i've stuck with the tried and true sm57 into an RNP (for the added headroom) for screaming. not as much pressence, and it does tend to be harder to get the vocals to sit on top of the mix, but all things considered i think taht is the best choice. the other method i've used is RNP and an Oktava MK319 with the singer about 18 inches back. but i guess the far micing isn't an option for you.
