mackie control and digi 002 rack

if I buy a digi 002 rack with a mackie control instead of the regular digi 002 w/ control surface, is that completely compatible or should I just go with the regular 002?

im sure its compatabile the controlers deal with the softwear not the hardwear but why not save upand get a dm24 and get a 16 channel controler vs a 8 channel controler plus 16 mic pres and effects?
