OK, so I got the Lucid A/D-D/A converters...

...and they just fucking rock!

But I really would like to use the A/D not only in front of the Masterlink at mixdown, but also in front of the HD24 for tracking/overdubs.

Only thing is, I need to convert AES/EBU or S/PDIF to Lightpipe to do this...

Now I have the M-Audio S.A.M., which does Lightpipe to S/PDIF conversion, but it doesn't have WordClock and anyways, I'm leary of the conversion quality.

Anyone know of another unit that has wordclock and is a better quality contender? (without resorting to Lucid's ADA-8824...)

If I have a RME Multiface at this time...... Will the Lucid or Apogee convertors bring more quality to a 24 bit digital (toslink) signal coming from a Yammy Motif 6....

How about from my AKG 4000B, RNP, RNC combo..... 24 bit or 32 floating in Cubase??????

How would you bypass the RME's convertors?????

Just interested if I can upgrade with my current setup without bypassing everything.....

Thanks

I use the RME Hammerfall 9632 which only has digital I/O, so no conversion occurs.

Indeed, a Lucid and/or Apogee converter would still be a nice option, I am sure that you will get improved performance out of a improved word clock generator. But, you need to make sure all your gear has a word clock input for this to work.

Thanks for the reply Ed......

With the list above would that apply???? The only thing with a word clock would be the Multiface unit..... This is where I get confused as where I can improve... Ive have read that RME has better convertors an the market for around $1400 or so.... would I need to replace the whole Multiface unit and buy a new word clock and convertor or just by a lucid for around $600 and HEAR THE DIFFERENCE with the Multiface and Hammerfall card.......

The GenX6 would probably be the cheapest upgrade to your setup. The better word clock would be an audible improvement to the A/D D/A conversion in the Hammerfall. But the difference isn't as apparent listening to a single track. It's when you have 24 tracks running that the affect of the GenX becomes more more audible. Low end will tighten up, the top opens up and it'll sound more focused.

Perfect.... That was the exact answer I needed. I figured that those word clocks would only help with multiple ADAT's or multiple digital units chained in sequence....... I have a very compact setup right now and I want to pack the best punch out off it... That Gen 6 might be my next purchase.....

I think Track Rat hit the point on the head.... Multiple tracks are where my problems usually arrive (muddyness and little distortion) I realize I am really new to the engineers seat... I have purchased a few items (C-Port, Aphex 107, etc) < All sold + $300 for the Multiface.....

All the units have been helpful for me in learning my ears a little better, but I would prefer to give myself the edge knowing I am working with top quality convertors as well as mics, pre's, compression etc...

Now its time for the monitors and a nice motorized mixing desk to get....... Time to Save !!!!!!!!

Tips from you guys have been very helpful for me through this long road...

Thanks...
Brad
