Check 32 bit or 16 bit when option arises?

I read somewhere in the forum that I should always
check all 32 bit options in CEP to avoid unnecessary conversions
that degrade the mix. But I tried using 32 bit for default recording
in settings, and CEP doesn't record. I checked the convert all opened files to 32 bit and no problems. My sound card is the onboard AC 97 soundchip on my motherboard. Can I really
check all those 32 bit options with my soundcard. It supports
32 bit unpacked, whatever that means. I'm confused.

All the 32 bit menus I've encountered.
1. Open new session or wave.
2. Settings > Multitrack> default record.
3. The Red button on the multitrack track panel.
4. Settings> Data> convert all opened files to 32 bit

Which ones do I check?

Options>Settings>Multitrack. Select 32-bit for Mixdowns, Track Recording, and Pre-Mixing.

If it doesn't work for you, then your soundcard's the problem I think.
