problem w/ the Fostex B16 1/2" 16 track

well, its probably not a problem w/ the machine but something I’m doing… I just got the B16 & hooked it up to my 8 channel board (just to test it out). Everything meters fine when I’m recording, but when I play back what I just recorded I can barely hear anything. What could cause that? I mean I have to turn my headphones up to 10 just to hear a faint whisper of what I’d recorded.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Your mixer should have tape return input knobs that adjust the level of signal coming back into the console.
If thats not it, the heads could be out of alignment, covered in tape debris or the heads may need relapping. Try the knob first.

thanks much. I'll try that... I wouldn't think it'd be the board not playing it back, because I don't see it showing up on the tape machines LED either. There was previously recorded tracks on the tape & I can hear those tracks fine on playback & see them metering...

Does that sound like a problem w/ the heads?

Ahhh.. The tracks were not armed properly more than likely.

Arm the tracks , hit record then play almost instantly after. the arm lights should blink until you hit record, then they should go to solid red on...Ive goofed this a few times myself by not paying attention.
I hope its that...otherwise you might be having to take the machine in for repair..
