Hey Chess,

I am the high bidder on your auction. I was wondering, and this isn't a deal breaker by any means, are the built in pres on the 1010 usable? I realize they aren't phantom powered, but have you ever used them to mic up a snare or toms? How do they compare to, say, an Audio Buddy or a Mackie?

I've used them a lot to plug my talkback mics and scratch vocal mics in to, and let me tell you . . .

. . . people are really impressed with the sheer audio clarity of my voice coming through that crappy old sm58 (that's been dropped, had beer spilled on numerous times, etc.) when I say: "That sucked. Let's take it again. "

Honestly, though, I've horsed around with them before, and there's nothing wrong with them. I'd use 'em for toms or something like that if I were in a pinch.

ebay is the biggest ripoff Ive seen in my life....with 3 minutes left I bid $158....perfectly reasonable price.....it sold for $237 shipped.....i can get a new one all day long for that price.....

That's ridiculously high, Chessrock. You lucked out. I think people's competitive spirit gets the better of them.

Meanwhile, I sell my Presonus Blue Tube for a fair price - $85. I probably would have gotte $185 on ebay. I guess I'm lazy and I'd rather just post a message here than take a couple hours taking digital photos, agonizing over the ad copy, and thinking about how much Ebay is charging me. Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

I've sold stuff on Ebay and gotten rediculously high prices for them. When I sell...Ebay is the way to go. Now...for buying, I have never seen something that was a "deal". An ok price maybe...but not something to write home about. I've gotten outbid at the last moment (and didn't have wanted to go higher) many times.


However, I've sold, as an example...
(fuzzface ...original, however... $325!!!!)
(Arp Odyssee...white face..... $850!!!)
(crappy K-mart, minikey keyboard... $100!!)

those prices are insane, as an example.....but if someone wants to buy it for that...well....

I can't control how much people are willing to spend on something.

When the guy emailed me asking how much for shipping, I just told him not to worry about it. So at least he got free shipping out of the deal. Still . . . I know where you're coming from, and I don't necessarily feel right about it. The opening price I set was $80, which is far from unreasonable.

Playing the ebay scene is a good strategy. Buy low -- try to sell high . . . deal with people who have good feedback and return your emails and answer questions . . .

You can hopscotch your way to much better gear. Just upgrade a little at a time, selling the old and buying used when you spot a good deal . . . focusing on stuff that you believe can hold it's value. Most of all, learn lessons from people who overpay -- set your limits and stick to them . . . keep looking and the deals will present themselves in time if you're patient.
