I really need something to record to.

I need something to record to, and will buy *something* within a couple of days. Now, I plan to save up money over the next year or so and buy something that will sound decent, but for now I have a limit of $300. I had a tascam 4 track, but it died. I understand that for $300 I will not get something that sounds good, but I just want to get the most out of it that I can. I would prefer to go digital. I can't go for long without something to record to, so saving up more money to buy something more expensive is not an option right now. Please share your suggestions as I'm not sure of my options at this price.
ps I am looking at the fostex mr-8 but maybe I could find a better recorder used for the same price?

This link is my answer to a similar question regarding using your pc and the price of going with other options such as four-tracks:

Hope this helps,

Well, I don't need portability so you would recommend recording to PC. I wonder if this can be done with $300? Keep in mind that I can't hijack this PC for this purpose.
On another note, I did some more research on the Fostex MR-8, and did I read this wrong, or can that machine only hold like one 3 minute song if you use all 8 tracks?!?!?!

Hey, it might be possible to build a pc for less than $300 including soundcard? I was looking on pricewatch.com and noticed there is only about $14 difference between a 400mhz cpu and a 1300 mhz cpu(which is $35 including shipping)!!! I have never built a pc from scratch before but I think I can do it, if anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it.

One thing that would really help me is if anyone could tell me the minimun components I would need.

I seriuosly doubt that you could build a computer for less than $300.00 USD.

BUT..........................................

You could probably buy an older used one for that price.

It's a bit over $300 and there's no input/output devices (keyboard, mouse, monitor). There might be room to lower the price...I just put this together really quickly, but it'll give you an idea.

Talking

Yeah no kidding!
Thanks a lot! That gives me a really good idea of how much I am going to need to spend. I would still have to buy a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and soundcard. It seems like there is no way to do this within my budget, so I'm not sure what I'll do.

You might be able to get a Boss BR-8 off of ebay for 250-300. These are decent machines. With the zip 100 you get like 49 mins total recording time but if someone's selling one with the zip 250 installed you get 2 hr 5 mins or so.
